Mendocino College Native American Student Resource Center’s purpose is to provide academic and personal support services to the prospective and current Native American Students. We are committed to hosting a space for any Native American Student to connect with their community, participate in cultural activities, and success.


Our Commitment

Goals of the Native American Student Resource Center

  • increase the Native American Student population to improve diversity at Mendocino College.
  • to become the first Native American serving institution in California.
  • improve Native American student access to Mendocino College.
  • conduct outreach to the local tribes, schools, and communities.
  • provide study space and up-to-date technology for the students in a designated area.
  • create a stronger relationship with tribal communities.
  • host interactive activities and events to increase cultural awareness and identity.
  • support Native American Students with their educational pathways to receive a certificate,  Associate’s Degree, and or an Associate's for transfer
  • To ensure an increase in our transferring to a 4-year bachelor's program to a university of their choosing

The Native American Student Resource Center has staff and Peer mentors available to support you. If you have any questions email: nativeamerican@mendocino.edu

Native American Peer Mentors are students who support other students in being successful. The program provides opportunities for students to connect and form strong academic relationships, share knowledge, and work together to succeed in college. Student mentors maintain weekly contacts with Native American Students through communication, cooperation, understanding.

Native American Peer Mentor Job Description

A Native American Peer Mentor at Mendocino College is a current student that has successfully completed at least one semester at Mendocino College. Peer Mentors work with prospective and current Mendocino College students in the Native American Student Resource Center (NASRC) and off-campus. Peer Mentors are knowledgeable about campus and community resources, will assist fellow students with academic and personal concerns, and will serve as a liaison between the student and Mendocino College.


Native American Peer Mentor duties include

  • Communicate the mission and culture of Mendocino College.
  • Provide Academic and social support to mentees.
  • Assist in monitoring student success.
  • Support students throughout semester.
  • Connect students to on-campus and virtual tutoring resources
  • Answer emails directed to our prospective student account.
  • Serve as a resource for current and prospective students, directing them to the proper departments on campus and being knowledgeable about these departments.
  • Participate at events such as Native American Motivation Day, Native American Heritage Celebration, College and University Day, the Career Fair, Week of Welcome at the beginning of each semester, orientations, etc.
  • Provide outreach support to our local high schools.
  • Develop workshops and presentations for Mendocino College and high school students.
  • Promote scholarship opportunities to current and prospective students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Identify as Native American.
  • Be enrolled in at least 6 units at Mendocino College.
  • A current student that has successfully completed at least one semester
  • Maintain a minimum of a 2.5 GPA.
  • Be able to attend training sessions, weekly and monthly meetings.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with students of diverse cultural, social, and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to recognize when referral is appropriate and necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and available to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and enthusiasm while remaining pro-active as a team member of Mendocino College

Why is the Pomo Pathway program? 

Pomo Pathway is a two-semester sequence of classes offered by Mendocino College to Native American Students. This pathway ensures completion of transfer level English and Math courses within the student’s first year and prepares them to pursue a degree.
