The Mendocino College Gallery presents:

Don’t Disturb This Groove: Cal Poly Humboldt Painters

Featuring: Gina Tuzzi, Eliseo Casiano, and select student artwork

Opening Reception on Thursday, February 19th, 4:30-6:30 pm

The Mendocino College Gallery presents Don’t Disturb This Groove, a group exhibition honoring the vibrant and ever-unfolding tradition of painting at Cal Poly Humboldt. The title is borrowed from the lyrics of a beloved song that holds particular meaning within the Painting Lab where professors Eliseo Casiano and Gina Tuzzi teach. Etched above the doorframe, Don’t Disturb This Groove greets every student who enters the studio, serving as a reminder to protect the creative flow, trust the process, and honor the shared spirit of making.

This exhibition features new and recent works by Eliseo Casiano and Gina Tuzzi, alongside Cal Poly Humboldt wood shop technician Jim Woodhead and nine distinguished painting alumni representing the past fifteen years. Each alumnus studied closely with the two professors, forging deep creative bonds that continue to resonate through their current practices.

Together, these artists celebrate enduring relationships, the layered legacy of painting within the department, and a shared love of the Humboldt landscape with its winding rivers and the mighty trees that stand as steadfast guardians of the region.

Across the exhibition, visitors will encounter a constellation of shared artistic sensibilities: radiant explorations of color, expressions of beauty, expansive interpretations of landscape, and works rooted in culture and ritual.

Don’t Disturb This Groove invites audiences into a multigenerational conversation shaped by mentorship, place, and a collective reverence for the transformative possibilities of painting.
