THEATRE TECHNICIAN/COLLEGE MEDIA TECHNICIAN
40 hours/week, 12 months/year

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direction of the assigned supervisor, performs duties in the areas of theatre & campus media technical support; plans with others, implements and provides technical theatre services including staging, lighting, and sound services; maintains specialized theatre equipment. Provides campus-wide audio-visual support services. Provides technical support for theatre, music & dance productions as well as for miscellaneous events in the college theatres (including rentals by outside groups, guest speakers, in-service meetings). Also assists with set-up and media services for campus events (e.g. graduation, film presentations, campus speakers) as needed and as assigned.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Work with faculty, staff, students, outside users of the theatre, and others as needed to provide support services (including facility assistance, equipment, scenery, lighting, and sound) for events and productions held in the theatres; assist in the lighting implementation and set construction for college performing arts productions.

Provide campus-wide event support for video projectors, “smart” classrooms, audio technology, and other related media systems. Collaborates with the IT department as needed and as appropriate.

Provide theatre support services for faculty, staff, students, outside users, and others as needed to ensure that a quality event/production results and safety standards are met.

Maintain inventories of theatre supplies, tools, and equipment; requisitions and stocks supplies. Responsible for maintaining supplies for theatre department.

Provide general set-up of equipment and other elements for campus events; operate or supervise the operation of equipment in the theatre facility and at other campus locations. Representative tasks include laying the dance floor for dance productions, deploying the choral shell for music events, setting up microphones for speakers and panels, assisting with campus preparation for graduation ceremony & events at various campus locations.

Paint and construct of scenery for productions and performances as assigned, working collaboratively with faculty and students.

Hang lights, and arrange lighting equipment according to design specifications; program lighting cues into computerized light board. Set up, operate, and modify lighting and sound equipment and special effects for theatre performances and other District needs as directed.

Resolves technical emergencies with equipment or crews during rehearsals or performances.

Observe, enforce, and assure compliance with fire, health, and safety regulations in the theatre; inspect and clean lighting instruments and shop equipment; inspect and repair electrical cable as assigned.

Operate and maintain a variety of equipment including hand and power tools, pneumatic tools, staplers, nail guns, ratchets, paint sprayers, lighting control systems, and audio control system.

Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Technical theatre services to support events/productions such as drama, dance, opera, concerts and lectures,

Set construction including carpentry, welding, and scenic painting

Operation and maintenance of all theatre, lighting, sound, and related electronic equipment

Techniques, tools, materials, and equipment used to produce set properties

Stage equipment utilized in assigned activities

Backstage operations coordination

Electrical control systems and related components

Related safety regulations and practices

Proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies

Classroom media, including audio visual and projection

ABILITY TO :
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others

Implement stage design, lighting, and sound requirements

Prepare, install and operate lighting and sound systems according to specifications

Design, assemble, and dismantle stage sets and produce props

Maintain and operate stage equipment and tools

Maintain an inventory of materials and equipment

Perform minor maintenance of materials and equipment

Understand and follow oral and written directions

Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

Work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Collaborate with faculty and provide instructional media support

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Theatre environment; subject to working flexible hours; exposure to paint fumes and hazards from working on ladders and scaffolding and around moving objects and stage props.

Physical demands include standing for long periods, sitting, reaching, bending, walking, climbing, pushing, and heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs).

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
The monthly salary range is $3629 - $4538 over five years. Twelve days of vacation leave and sick leave are earned each year. Vacation leave increases with the length of service. Family medical, dental, and vision benefits and employee life insurance are provided. There are 19 paid holidays annually.
