INSTRUCTOR/ASSISTANT DIRECTOR - NURSING

Full-time, tenure-track faculty position

DUTIES
This is a combined instructional and administrative position. Under general direction of the Dean of Career and Technical Education, instructs nursing courses and assists the nursing program Director in carrying out selected management duties and in her/his absence, assumes responsibility for management of the nursing program.

INSTRUCTION

Instructional responsibilities as outlined in the Full-Time Faculty (CBA) Collective Bargaining Agreement. Also includes teaching courses in advanced adult medical-surgical nursing, with some acute clinical psychiatry background or willing to learn.

  • Instructs undergraduate courses, including but not limited to Nursing Technical Lab I/II/III/IV; Complex Medical Surgical Nursing I, and Complex Medical Surgical Nursing II; Pharmacology. These course may include lab, clinical and lecture hours and are directed to both first year and second year RN students.

  • Meets classes and conducts finals as included in the schedule of classes; prepares classroom presentations, student activities, and assignments; teaches class hours; evaluates student’s performance based on quizzes, comprehensive examinations, finals and/or other assignments appropriate to the course outline; teaches courses in accordance with the description published in the catalog, the course outline, and the schedule of classes; prepares a syllabus for each course and distributes it to students at the first class meeting and/or electronically; posts and maintains office hours; prepares and submits accurate and timely student reports; participates in curriculum development, review modification and deletion; maintains currency in the classroom an necessary; provides input and assistance to the Dean regarding the schedule of classes, schedule changes, and the recruitment and assignment of part-time faculty in the discipline; collaborates with the Lake and Willits Centers concerning classes in the discipline.

  • Reports on time for assignments, including classes and meetings; attends in-service days, commencements, and faculty meetings as scheduled; completes required flex hours for professional development purposes; serves on college committees; participates in full-time and part-time faculty evaluations; may supervise student workers in the discipline; participates in the development of an annual budget for the discipline, submits purchase orders, maintains related records; participates in the completion of program review; develops and assesses student learning outcomes in the discipline; participates in the processes of shared governance; secures and properly stores equipment assigned to discipline; conducts a periodic inventory of equipment; participates in activities to promote articulation with local high schools and four-year colleges as mutually agreed upon with the Dean.

The Assistant Director will receive 25% release time for maintaining the following duties:

  • Assist the RN Program Director in carrying out selected administrative duties, including but not limited to the following: grant writing, securing Memorandum of Agreements (MOA) for clinical placement sites, assisting with budgeting, and assisting with the completion of annual paperwork required by the BRN and the District.

  • In the absence of the Director, assumes responsibility for the administration of the nursing program.

  • Provide information, assistance, and encouragement to students to facilitate their ability to plan and carry out the program graduation.

  • Assist Director as needed in arranging facilities needed for graduation ceremony including scheduling of theatre, seeking volunteers to assist with graduation announcements and programs, and inviting appropriate college and hospital representatives.

  • Work with the class officers to organize and guide periodic student meetings throughout the semester to provide a formal opportunity for student input and a time to give information to students about graduation, topics discussed at faculty meetings, etc. (This is in addition to the current ongoing informal communication that exists within the department.)

  • Request input on a regular basis regarding views for topics on faculty meeting agendas, student handbook, program parts, and other appropriate topics as they arise.

  • Encourage the class to elect a clinical representative to act as student liaison and come to faculty meetings. Support the student who takes on this responsibility.

  • Monitor student meetings and provide students with appropriate guidance.

  • Be lead clinical liaison between program and clinical sites. Work directly with Director regarding MOA’s and other clinical contracts. Arrange and coordinate clinical preceptorship sites for senior students.

  • Coordinate training and selection of preceptors for students. Track scheduling of preceptor shifts, monitor students and preceptors paperwork, and ensure timely distribution of CE certificates for preceptors as applicable. Update preceptor training manual each cycle. Communicate effectively in person, via phone, and email to ensure appropriate experiences for students. Be available via phone, email and/or pager during student’s preceptor experience.

  • Coordinate clinical rotations each semester by contacting appropriate hospital personnel, educating hospital personnel regarding student expectations, and scheduling appropriate training/orientations for each clinical facility.

  • Complete grade summaries at mid-term and prior to final examination to be distributed to students.

  • Communicate with other instructors regarding need for “early intervention” or other remediation for students at risk.

  • Assure that end of semester evaluations are completed by students for each class, and each clinical site. Distribute end of semester evaluations to each clinical facility for feedback.

  • Ensures syllabi are updated annually, and posted on the Nursing Department’s portal.

  • Maintain instructor duties for assigned course, which includes evaluations of SLO and assessments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must possess and retain a current, clear and active license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in nursing OR a Bachelor’s in nursing AND a Master’s in health education or health sciences.
     
  • At least one year’s experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care (within the past five years) AND completion of at least one year’s experience teaching courses related to nursing or a course which includes practice in teaching nursing.
     
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

    Knowledge of : Nursing research, evidence based practice skills, advanced physical assessment, medication calculations and administration, cardiac and endocrine disorders, lab interpretation, nursing leadership, clinical instruction and decision making.

    Ability to : Effectively instruct assigned courses using a variety of techniques; evaluate and develop curriculum and instructional materials; update course materials to reflect current nursing practice; assess student academic progress; communicate effectively with students and hospital staff regarding student expectations, course requirements, evaluation procedures and other program requirements; serve as a liaison with community health care facilities and staff; follow faculty mandates of the CA Board of Registered Nursing; develop course schedules; stay current in the subject area through continued professional development and active involvement in professional organizations and activities; evaluate faculty; maintain records; prepare reports; work cooperatively and effectively with others; demonstrate respect for the rights and needs of students; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; work variable locations and hours.

    ASSIGNMENT: This is a full-time, 10 month, tenure-track position. The annual teaching load is 510 lecture hours, 680 lab hours, or a combination of the two. The annual work year includes 166 instructional days and nine professional development/flex days. This assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, as well as travel to, and instruction at, off-campus centers within the District.

    SALARY AND BENEFITS: The monthly starting salary is $55,645-$79,832 commensurate with education and teaching experience. There is also an annual $2,678 doctoral stipend. Family medical, dental, and vision benefits and employee life insurance are provided. Faculty participates in the CalSTRS retirement system.
