INSTRUCTOR – THEATRE ARTS / TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

SUMMARY
Mendocino College seeks a creative, enthusiastic and collaborative educator to teach courses in Technical Theatre Production (including scenery & lighting design & production) and to serve as Technical Director for the college's two theaters, including the state of the art Center for Visual & Performing Arts complex. The ideal candidate will be a skilled technician, a committed teacher, an imaginative artist, a collaborative team player, and a highly organized and detail oriented leader. S/he will have a strong interest and background in multi-cultural arts, and will have the capacity to assist the department in expanding its curriculum and productions to include multicultural performance styles which reflect the ethnic & cultural diversity of our students, our community and our world.
TEACHING DUTIES
Instruct courses in Technical Theatre in both the classroom and lab settings; course assignments may include but not limited to, Introduction to Stagecraft, Introduction to Lighting, Theatre Production Crew as well as general Theatre Courses such as Introduction to Theatre and Script Analysis. Teaching duties will include supervision of student production crews for college performances and other events in or college theatres.
Work closely with other Faculty to envision, create and maintain an excellent student-centered performance program and curriculum; assist in expansion of the current program to include increased emphasis on multicultural arts.
Participate in program and curriculum development in Technical Theatre areas. Investigate and possibly expand offerings in international and multi-cultural performance traditions.
Provide instruction in accordance with course outlines and schedules of classes; prepare a syllabus for each class to inform students about the course objectives, grading plan, assignments, and attendance requirements; develop, maintain, and assess student learning outcomes; evaluate students' performance; provide students with timely feedback; submit grades and attendance reports.
Post and maintain daily office hours; develop and maintain current curriculum materials and course outlines; recommend course scheduling; select textbooks and instructional materials; recommend library selections; conduct faculty evaluations; mentor adjunct faculty; serve as a liaison with local schools and the community.
Participate in budget development and maintenance, equipment storage and inventory, student advising, faculty meetings, committee assignments, professional development, flex activities, program review, and processes of the Academic Senate.
OTHER DUTIES (with possible release-time determined annually)
Under direction of the Dean of Instruction and in close collaboration with Theatre Arts Faculty and limited classified/hourly staff, plan, implement and provide technical theatre services including staging, lighting, and sound design for college theatre, dance and music productions.
Train and provide direction to classified staff, students and hourly employees. Supervise classified technician in order to maintain inventories of theatre supplies, tools, and equipment; requisition and stock supplies; submit purchase orders for materials; maintain related records.
Design scenery, lighting, and sound for college theatre, dance and music performances (or supervise student designers and/or hourly staff); prepare or assist students in the preparation of ground plans, models, and other design media. Supervise students and/or hourly staff in hanging, focusing and programming lighting equipment for college productions. With the assistance of students and a classified technician, paint and construct theatrical scenery; research as necessary.
Schedule, coordinate and support use of the college theatres, and other venues as appropriate, for both in-house and outside events. Coordinate and plan technical theatre services with faculty, staff, and students, outside users, and others as needed to ensure that safety standards are met and that quality of events/productions is maintained. Meet with users to determine production, material, and equipment needs; project costs for each event/production; prepare reports and billing statements as needed.
Develop and enforce safety protocols in the college theatres; assure compliance with fire, health, and safety regulations in the theatre; supervise and coordinate students and/or hourly employees in the inspection and maintenance of theatre and shop equipment. Operate and maintain a variety of equipment including hand and power tools, pneumatic tools, staplers, nail guns, ratchets, paint sprayers, lighting control systems, and audio control system.
Resolve technical emergencies with equipment or crews during rehearsals or performances.
Coordinate adjunct dance faculty in scheduling and production of two annual dance performances which reflect the diversity of our students and community. Serve as technical director and producer for these productions.
Participate in production and coordination of at least one annual multi-cultural themed performance event. This may be a student performance created in collaboration with other theatre, dance and/or music faculty and / or events involving guest artists performing on our campus to enrich our students’ experiences and our community.

QUALIFICATIONS
MA or MFA in Theatre with an emphasis in Technical Production or Design OR the equivalent.

Plan, coordinate and implement stage design, lighting, and sound requirements; prepare, install and operate lighting and sound systems; design, assemble, and dismantle stage sets and produce props; maintain and operate stage equipment and tools; estimate costs and maintain records; organize, schedule and control workflow; train and provide direction to students and hourly employees.
Collaborate in the creation of theatrical art and design which celebrates multicultural traditions and diversity of performance styles. Serve as an inspirational leader, collaborating with our excellent faculty in the areas of theatre, dance, music and fine art to manage and sustain a Performing Arts Center which serves as an anchor for our vibrant rural community.
Working Conditions : Theatre environment; subject to flexible hours including evenings and weekends; exposure to paint fumes and hazards from working on ladders and scaffolding and around moving objects. Physical demands include standing for long periods, sitting, reaching, bending, walking, climbing, pushing, and heavy lifting (up to 75 lbs).
ASSIGNMENT: This is a full-time, tenure-track position. The teaching load is fifteen equated units per semester (=15 lecture hours per week, 20 laboratory hours per week, or a combination thereof). The annual work year includes 166 instructional days and nine professional development/flex days. The start date for this position will be August 22, 2016. This assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, as well as travel to, and instruction at, off-campus centers within the District.

The annual starting salary is $54,024 – 77,507, commensurate with education and teaching experience. The maximum entry level is Step 7 of the appropriate column. The maximum salary is currently $99,686. There is also $2,600 doctoral stipend. Ten days of sick leave are earned annually. Family medical, dental, and vision benefits and employee life insurance are provided.
