CHILD DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST
10 months/year; 40 hours/week

Mendocino College is hiring for two Child Development Specialists.

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direction of the program supervisor, plans and implements a program for the development of pre-school/toddler children in a children's center; provides learning experiences for Child Development students; directs and controls a preschool/toddler classroom laboratory.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Duties related to children: Plans and implements a daily schedule of learning experiences for the development of children in a children's center and laboratory environment appropriate for Child Development students; conducts large group presentations to include concepts, language, literature, music/movement, listening skills, and developing a sense of belonging; provides an environment to facilitate physical and emotional development of preschool/toddler children; maintains an environment conducive to learning.

Plans activities, instructional materials, and lesson plans appropriate for assigned age level; designs and develops learning materials with the approval of the supervisor; prepares lesson plans and develops appropriate teaching aids; confers with instructional staff and students regarding assignments, student progress, and child progress.

Conducts daily health inspection of children and adults; sterilizes toys, counters, and tables; assists in maintaining rooms and play areas in a clean, stimulating, orderly, and safe condition; provides first aid as appropriate; assists children individually and in small groups; works with small groups of children in a variety of activities; directs activities in the classroom and outside yard area; maintains order and discipline; plans and implements IEP's for each assigned child.

Duties related to students: Assigns tasks to teacher aides, student interns, and work study students; evaluates performance and serves as a role model; directs student observers and parent participants in developing effective relationships with children and other adults in a laboratory classroom; evaluates student teachers for completion of practice checklist; provides input to instructors to assist with assignment of final grade; advises students where to locate resources to assist and improve in laboratory skills; assists in the planning and facilitating of student orientation to the learning laboratory classes and conduct tours of the assigned center; organizes and prepares laboratory classroom prior to class.

Duties related to parents: Participates in planning and carrying out parent conferences; provides information to parents concerning the child's progress, abilities, and areas of concern; explains program procedures and classroom activities as requested; provides guidance and instruction to parents regarding various parenting-related issues; refers parents and families to appropriate community services.

Duties related to staff relations: Attends staff and planning meetings with staff and participating college students to assess staff and students, center needs, and program development; attends conferences and workshops concerning Early Childhood Development; operates a variety of Center equipment; prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports related to attendance, skills development, lesson plans, student performance, and accidents; performs clerical support duties as assigned; assists in ordering instructional supplies and equipment.

Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE OF :
Current concepts used in Early Childhood Education and Child Development.
Basic child psychology and development including family dynamics.
Curriculum planning for a child development program.
Health and safety requirements of children.
Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Methods of observing, evaluating, and recording child behavior.
Verbal and written communication skills.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

ABILITY TO:
Plan, develop, and implement educational experiences for children.
Develop and maintain effective relationships with toddlers, preschool children, students, and parents.
Tutor and direct parent and college student participation in planned preschool activities.
Maintain a healthy and safe environment.
Work independently with little direction.
Provide support and appropriate child development information to parents.
Learn, apply, and explain policies, procedures, rules, and regulations related to the operation of the program.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Plan and organize work.
Meet schedules and timelines.
Provides work direction and guidance to classroom assistants.
Work confidentially with discretion.
Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Maintain records and prepare reports.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Holds a valid Children’s Center Teachers Permit.
Possess Infant and Child CPR, and First Aid,
California Health and Safety Certificate or may be completed within thirty days of employment.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
6 units of Infant and toddler courses
AA Degree in Child Development or a related field
Bilingual

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Classroom environment; working indoors and outdoors during play activities; some children are not toilet trained and require changing of diapers; exposure to working with children who may become sick
Physical demands include sitting, standing, reaching, bending, walking, and occasional light lifting (up to 50 lbs).

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
The monthly salary range is $3,370-$4,216 over five years. 10 days of Sick Leave is accrued each year with an additional 2 paid days off to be arranged with the supervisor. Family medical, dental, and vision benefits and employee life insurance are provided.
