INSTRUCTOR – BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

DUTIES
• Instructs lower division courses which may include any biology courses listed in the Mendocino College catalog. The department currently offers courses in human biology, including physiology and anatomy; zoology; cell and molecular biology; botany; and marine science. Most classes include a lecture and laboratory component. Laboratory responsibilities include but are not limited to work with lab personnel, basic maintenance and use of instruments and equipment, and overall laboratory supervision.
• Instructional responsibilities include but are not limited to the following as included in the Full-Time Faculty Handbook: Provides instruction in accordance with established course outlines and the schedule of classes; informs students regarding course requirements, student assessment criteria, and attendance requirements; prepares and grades class assignments and examinations; informs students of their academic progress; maintains necessary attendance and scholastic records, submits them according to published timelines; posts and maintains daily office hours; maintains course outlines for assigned courses; actively recommends course scheduling; participates in the hiring of instructors; selects textbooks and instructional materials; recommends library selections; submits budget requests; supervises equipment replacement and repair; participates in student advising, student activities, curriculum development, faculty meetings, committee assignments, faculty evaluations, professional development and flex activities, and inservice programs; serves as a liaison with local schools and the community.

The Biology Department at Mendocino College maintains high standards and places primary emphasis on quality undergraduate education. The department houses student computers with data acquisition interfaces and Ethernet communication networks, which support and enhance classroom and laboratory instruction. In addition to the typical kinds of college biology laboratory equipment, instrumentation includes Biopac MP36 units, PCR, Electrophoresis, UV-Visible Spectrometers, Leica microscopes and stereoscopes, Leica Digital Camera/Microscope, and Somso Anatomical Models. There is a separate cadaver lab with dissection tables and Stryker saws. Located in Point Arena, there is a 15-acre ocean front field station that is used for biological field study with the capability of housing up to 24 students. The department has a laboratory technician who ensures that reagents, supplies and equipment are available and in good working order for all experiments; meets with instructors on a regular basis to coordinate the laboratory program, maintain the instruments or schedule the required maintenance by professionals, and maintain the department inventory. High standards for health and safety are diligently maintained.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Master’s in any biological science OR Bachelor’s in any biological science AND a Master’s in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR the equivalent.

Assignment: This is a full-time, tenure-track position. The teaching load is fifteen equated units per semester (=15 lecture hours per week, 20 laboratory hours per week, or a combination thereof). The annual work year includes 166 instructional days and 7 professional development/flex days and 2 inservice days per year. The start date for this position will be August 22, 2016. This assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, as well as travel to, and instruction at, off-campus centers within the District.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: The full-time faculty salary schedule is available at: /tc/pg/1323/salary_schedule_faculty_full.html The annual starting salary is $54,024 – 77,507, commensurate with education and teaching experience. The maximum entry level is Step 7 of the appropriate column. The maximum salary is currently $99,686. There is also $2,600 doctoral stipend. Ten days of sick leave are earned annually.
