MESA Scholarships and Internships

Universities and hiring committees weigh an applicant’s life and work experience along with academic performance. MESA students have the opportunity to develop these experiences through, scholarships, industry internships, university research fellowships, and cooperative work experience programs. Begin developing your university application, while refining real world skills that will assist you in your chosen career.

Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarships are a great way to finance your education, while enhancing your university application and resume. Although they can take some time to fill out, that amount of time is almost always less than what it would take to earn the same amount of funding through a traditional job. Please review these links for more information about scholarship opportunities. If you have any questions about the application process, stop by the MESA center and we will work through it together!

Internship and Research Opportunities

As the population becomes more educated, experience is often the deciding factor that can secure your advanced education and future employment. Paid internships are an excellent way to gain that experience, while testing out a job to see if it really is for you, but don’t take our word for it. View first person MESA member accounts of several of the internships below. Many of the internships listed here include transportation, room, board and a several thousand dollar stipend! Many even take place during the summer, allowing you time to focus on your studies during the school year . . . the best of both worlds! If you have any questions about these internships, feel free to stop by the MESA center.

STEM Internship and Research Opportunities

Application in Modern Materials – UC Merced

Student in science lab

Hi everyone! My name is Daniel Panasenko, chemical engineering major and proud MESA member. I am extremely grateful to MESA for connecting me with and informing me about various internships, scholarships, and research positions that are available to any and all STEM majors that are willing to apply for them. In the summer of 2016, I was accepted into a research experience for undergraduates (REU) at UC Merced called Applications in Modern Materials (AiMM), in which I worked with a graduate student doing organic chemistry research. Our task was to find new and sustainable ways to synthesize indene molecules, which can be used in medicine and pharmaceuticals. Needless to say, the experience was wonderful. It exposed me to a very hands-on approach of organic chemistry, and allowed me to better understand what life as an organic chemist working in a laboratory would be like. I encourage all MESA students to apply for any research positions they find interesting. In all honesty, I was accepted into this particular REU the second time I applied – so don’t give up! The experience is definitely worth the effort of applying!

NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

NSF REU From Genomes to Phenomes – Exploring Function Across Scales at Clemson University

From this internship I have obtained valuable research skills and the opportunity to explore new places. Working under Dr. Lisa Bain, I had the opportunity to learn a lot of different techniques such as RNA extraction and purification, conversion of RNA to cDNA, qPCR, and animal husbandry.  I also had the opportunity to present my research by giving a talk and presenting a poster at the Clemson University Summer 2016 Undergraduate Research Symposium. Aside from lab work, we also participated in great workshops and field trips. The most exciting trip we took was to the Belle  W. Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science. We spent two days exploring the center and the swamp nearby; I walked in the swamp and saw lots of spiders and even a baby alligator. The boardwalk they constructed over the swamp was very narrow, two planks of wood wide, and often creaked under your weight. Overall it was very exciting, and I learned a lot about some of the research they are conducting at the center.  This has been a great rewarding experience where I was able to learn more about research, graduate school, and the state of South Carolina.
