First Year Institute

The First Year Institute at Mendocino College, known as FYI, is a program which provides services to first year college students.  FYI is funded by a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) grant.  The purpose of this grant is to expand educational opportunities and improve the academic attainment of Hispanic students AND expand and enhance academic offerings, program quality and institutional stability.

Who is eligible to participate in the First Year Institute (FYI)?

Students who are in their first year of college AND meet one or more of the following criteria can participate in the First Year Institute:

  • Are Latino/a
  • Are a First Generation College student (i.e., parents didn't complete a 4 year college degree)
  • Come from a low income household
  • Are an AB 540 student (Dreamers)
  • Are from an underrepresented population group (i.e., Native American, African American, Foster Youth, Homeless Youth or other underrepresented groups)

Participating in FYI will provide first year college students with additional resources designed to help them achieve their educational goals. Resources such as:

  • Taking classes with students who have similar goals
  • A designated college counselor
  • New Student Welcome
  • Welcome package to start the school year
  • Virtual visits to universities
  • Textbook lending library
  • Chromebook checkout
  • Calculator checkout
  • And more!
