Guidelines for Short Play Submissions
Final Deadline: Friday, February
13th, 2004
Were planning
our second annual performance of original, student-written plays, and
we need good scripts to make it a success.
Approximately five
plays will be chosen. These will be performed at the end of the spring
semester by Reid Edelmans Acting Styles class. They will
also be published in the 2004 issue of Zephyr, Mendocino College's
online arts zine.
Anyone who is a current
or former student of Mendocino College can submit.
Here are the parameters:
- Your play should
not exceed fifteen minutes in length. Using standard playwriting format,
most scripts average about a minute a page. You can also get a rough
estimate by reading it aloud.
- You must use all
of the following words in the actual dialogue: salivate, lava, vehemently,
swank.
- You must involve
a broken umbrella as one of your props.
- You need a conflict,
meaning at least two of the characters have desires that are in conflict
with one another. (Ex: Lolas in a shoe store and she needs red
high heels for a wedding that starts in ten minutes; the clerk needs
to close the store immediately because hes just learned his favorite
film star is having a drink in the bar next door; their needs/desires
are in conflict.)
- The conflict
should be resolved by the end of the play in one of three
ways:
One character gets what he/she wants.
All the characters get what they want.
None of the characters get what they want.
- There are no hard
and fast guidelines about the number of characters you can include,
but given the size of the casting pool, 2-4 characters are recommended.
- This will be a
low-budget (read: no budget) production, so keep the set and costume
requirements minimal.
- To submit, leave
your script in the envelope outside s office (1140) or e-mail
it as an attachment to jgehrman@mendocino.edu.
Feel free to call with questions: (707) 468-3150.
