Shamu
14"h
x 3"w, 2002
Re-cycled clay: a mixture of porcelain, soldate, sculpture mix,
and Black Mountain. The glazes are cover coats except for matador
red (a lead glaze) and raku multi-colored copper. The piece was
first bisque-fired, then fired in the raku kiln, removed immediately,
and put in a reduction barrel.
"My
idea for "Shamu" was taken from a book on Alaskan artifacts.
The original was of wood and was used as a food bowl by a northwest
coast tribe."
