Rebar Teapot
8 3/4"H
x 8 1/4" W x 4 1/2" D, 2001
Black Mountain high fire clay with glaze, 1/2 steel Rebar, nylon/cotton
string
" I
had never made a teapot before and was thinking about how to approach
it. I had some scraps of Rebar, used for reinforcing concrete
foundations, and decided that was my parameter. Rebar has a chevron
pattern with a lateral line along its length. I rolled the Rebar
on the clay and then slightly enhanced the pattern for depth.
I applied the glaze over the pattern in the clay and then sanded
most of it off, leaving glaze only in the deep pattern. Rebar
is a very dense, weighty medium. I was surprised at how well the
Rebar handle balances with the weight of the clay body. Pouring
with a "Rebar Teapot" is very smooth, solid and comforting."
