Ceramics

The following listings include the name of the artist, followed by the title of the work, dimensions, date, and description.

Paul Allen: Tosie: 11"h, Porcelain mold, raku multi copper and clear crackle glaze.

Ross Beck: "Honoring The Enemy Warrior #1", 13 1/2"H x 19" W x 8" D, 2000, Materials: Black Mountain high fire clay with glaze; "This piece is one of a series that represents a civilization which respected and learned from the challenges of other, even opposing, cultures. In their early, brutal history, like ours, many battles and wars were fought. The heads of their enemies were preserved and placed in ceremonial areas, a visually powerful reminder of their past. There, chieftains would take counselors, fathers would take sons, and reflect on the understanding that their strengths and knowledge were built upon the strengths and knowledge and challenges of others. There is no winning in any engagement where greater knowledge and understanding are not gained, where we cannot find a way to "Honor the Enemy Warrior.""

Ross Beck: "Rebar Teapot", 8 3/4"H x 8 1/4" W x 4 1/2" D, 2001; Materials: Black Mountain high fire clay with glaze, 1/2 steel Rebar, nylon/cotton string; "I had never made a teapot before and was thinking about how to approach it. I had some scraps of Rebar, used for reinforcing concrete foundations, and decided that was my parameter. Rebar has a chevron pattern with a lateral line along its length. I rolled the Rebar on the clay and then slightly enhanced the pattern for depth. I applied the glaze over the pattern in the clay and then sanded most of it off, leaving glaze only in the deep pattern. Rebar is a very dense, weighty medium. I was surprised at how well the Rebar handle balances with the weight of the clay body. Pouring with a "Rebar Teapot" is very smooth, solid and comforting."

Pippin of Picasso, 22"h, 2000, Raku - mixed media plus salt.

Adrienne Campbell: Shamu, 14"h x 3"w, 2002, Re-cycled clay: a mixture of porcelain, soldate, sculpture mix, and Black Mountain. The glazes are cover coats except for matador red (a lead glaze) and raku multi-colored copper. The piece was first bisque-fired, then fired in the raku kiln, removed immediately, and put in a reduction barrel. "My idea for "Shamu" was taken from a book on Alaskan artifacts. The original was of wood and was used as a food bowl by a northwest coast tribe."

Tony Chiantelli: Western Dragon Teapot, 6"h x 4.5"w x 7"l, 200, WSO stoneware, Glaze: celadon, swg blue, and clear, "I decided to use the westernized dragon for my inspiration. I airbrushed this piece three times to get the effect I was looking for."
