Mission
Zephyr is dedicated to celebrating achievement in the arts and encouraging creative
excellence by providing a showcase for the highest quality student and alumnae
work.
Origin
In the mid 1990's, professors Nancy McLelland, Virgina Wagner, and Bob
Comings, all long time faculty members at Mendocino College, began discussing
the possibility of publishing a literary and visual arts journal at the College.
In the Spring of 2001, McLelland presented a proposal to the Mendocino College Foundation for partial funding to publish an online arts journal. The grant was awarded.
Dean of Instruction Gaither Lowenstein offered his support of the project and a steering committee was formed consisting of Lowenstein, McLelland, Comings, Steve Oliveria, and new English faculty member Jody Gehrman, who was chosen to serve as the editor. Plans were put in place to publish the first edition in the Spring of 2002.
It is hoped that Zephyr will be published annually. Past editions will be archived and remain accessible. In the future, streaming audio and video capabilities may allow us to include selected video and musical submissions.

Content
The Spring 2002 edition features works in two areas, literary and visual arts.
The literary arts includes short stories, 10-minute plays, essays, and poems.
The visual arts includes ceramics, computer graphics, drawing and collage, painting,
and textiles.
With the promise of streaming audio and video it is hoped that selected perfoming arts events will be added to future editions of Zephyr.
Submitting Work
Deadlines and guidelines for the next edition of Zephyr will be announced in
the Fall of 2002. Entry forms and information will be made available online
and at several locations on the Ukiah campus as well as at the Willits and Lake
Centers of Mendocino College.
Deadlines are anticipated to be in late January to mid-February.
