MESA: The Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) is a 27-year old program that serves educationally disadvantaged students and, to the extent possible by law, emphasizes participation by students from groups with low eligibility rates for four-year colleges. MESA works with over 21,000 students throughout California from elementary through university levels. MESA is funded by the state legislature, corporate contributions, and various grants. It is a program of the University of California. The goal of the MESA Community College Program is to increase the numbers of disadvantaged community college students, especially those groups with low rates of college eligibility, to successfully transfer to a four-year university, by facilitating their educational planning and preparation in Math, Science and Engineering. Activities for MESA students include specially designed study groups with experienced tutors and helpful facilitators, priority access to the Math, Science Study Center, individual assistance with transfer to a 4-year college or university, field trips to science based institutions and sites, internships opportunities in local, state and national programs, and priority participation in the Summer Science Institute at Mendocino College's Point Arena Marine Study Center. Mini-Corps: Bilingual full-time students who want to become teachers may participate in the statewide Mini-Corps program. Participants are instructional assistants in pre-school and K-12 classrooms and serve as role models for migrant students.
