Mendocino College Career Connections Panel on Information Technology on November 17th
For those who are asking the all too familiar question of what they want to be when they grow up, or dusting off their copy of What Color is Your Parachute, Mendocino College has another option. The Career & Transfer Center at the college has developed monthly career panel presentations as another medium in which to help direct students and the community into making solid choices towards a career path. This month the focus is on Information Technology (IT) careers, which include careers in 3D Animation, Network Administration, Technical Support, Computer Programming, Graphic Art, PC Support and Virtual Reality, to name a few.
Some of the panel members presenting this month are: Jim Persky – founder and owner of Pacific.net; Karen Christopherson – Director of Computing Services for Mendocino College; Finn Alden – owner of Alden Integration/Alden Tech & Design; Jeff Bergamini – Computer Science Instructor at Mendocino College.
Each month a career pathway is chosen as the focus of a panel of four to six community members who are currently in that profession. Each panel member speaks about the way they obtained their vocation: what education they had, what decisions lead to the specific job they have, what they like and dislike, what inspires them, and what they would do differently if they could. Then there is a question and answer period with the audience. This format allows students to listen to those who have achieved a career which they are interested in pursuing and interact with them to gain further insight.
Last month Health Careers were highlighted with five professionals from nurses to doctors, paramedics to midwives. Candie Dickinson, the Career & Transfer Center’s Director, said she was “delighted with the presentations. Everyone had such genuine and unique responses which gave so many an honest idea of what it takes to be in this field.”
The panel presentation on IT Careers will be this Thursday, November 17th, from 12:30 – 1:30pm, at the Little Theatre in the Lowery Library building on the Ukiah Campus of Mendocino College.
