GAME PREVIEW: 2/1/12 Mendocino VS Yuba

The Yuba College 49ers come into tonight’s Bay Valley Conference match up as the #2 ranked team in the Northern California Regional Polls and #3 in the state with a 22-3 overall record (7-0 BVC). Coach Doug Cornelius’ club is one of the deepest and most talented teams in the state and his 49ers have won the Bay Valley Conference 5 years running. Yuba is always strong and this years team may be their best. The 49ers are led by sophomore wing Spencer Butterfield, a 6’3 versatile player that can shoot the pull-up, post up and rebound. Anthony Romero is a super athletic wing that can also fill it up from all over the floor. 6’8 post Kevin Crabb is very talented with his back to the basket and has soft touch on his mid-range jump shot. Deaundray Robinson may be the most athletic post in the conference and rebounds and scores in bunches as well. Combo guard Cody Kale is a skilled guard that shoots and drives and will run the team very effectively. Anto Olah returns as an inside, outside threat for the 49ers and he hurt Mendocino all 3 games last year as a freshman. Yuba has dominated in their 7 BVC wins by averaging 93 points per game and holding opponents to a mere 60. The 49ers lit up the scoreboard for 114 points against Alameda and will be looking to give the Eagles all they can handle.

The home team Eagles come into tonight’s match-up riding a 9 game Bay Valley Conference winning streak (16-8 overall) including a tough 6 point win Monday vs. College of Marin. Leading the way for Coach Billy Offill’s squad in the Marin game was sophomore Trey Johnson who dropped in 17 points and collected 13 rebounds. Nick Hodge was his solid self with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Kelly Kurtz played well with 10 points and 7 boards. Cesar Mendoza continued to be “Mr. Clutch” for Mendocino as he iced the game from the foul line. Versatile Forward Heyvis Jackson chipped in with 13 points for the Eagles as well. With Monday nights win the Eagles clinched their second straight Bay Valley Conference Bay Division title and guaranteed themselves no lower than a 2 seed in the upcoming BVC tournament (February 14 at the higher seeds). This is the first match-up of the season between these two teams.
