Eagles Soccer – Spring Newsletter
The first week of March will officially be the coaching staff’s first full year with the Mendocino College Soccer Program. When we began we had no returning players and were able to bring in fifteen new players to the program. We have raised nearly twenty-five thousand dollars during this time and we have brought thousands of people in our community and surrounding communities onto Mendocino College Campus! I have not done this on my own, nor could I do this on my own! A special thanks to assistant coaches Naomi Rhodes and Joe Munoz for all their efforts in making this program a big success and helping build a proud and strong culture in our soccer program!
We begin the spring season full of promise! After completing our first fall season of competition with 15 freshmen, we are excited about the 2012 fall season. We will have 9 returning players for next season and we have already received verbal commitments from four players. As of right now, All North Bay League Defender from Ukiah High School Haley Young, all-time leading goal scorer from Mendocino High School and Santa Rosa United Player Anna Waldman, captain and first team all conference player from Williams High School Itzel Rameriz, and finally two year varsity midfield player from Ukiah High School Dora Chavez have verbally committed to play for the Eagles next season. Our goal is to reach 22 players by the start of pre-season fall camp. All nine players returning were starters including Limbet Mena(Williams, CA) who garnered 1st team All Bay Valley Conference honors and Morgan Elam (Bakersfield, CA) who garnered 2nd team All Bay Valley Conference honors.
The team not only worked hard and improved throughout the fall season, but the team was excellent in the classroom. The team grade point average was a 3.25 for the fall semester. Kellie Chapman (Ukiah), Michelle Chown (McKinleville), Missy Denno (Middletown) had a GPA between 3.00 and 3.49. Caitlin Clawson and Elizabeth Yepiz earned Grade Point Averages between 3.50 and 3.99, while Kayla D’Arcangeli (New Mexico), Limbet Mena (Williams), Dana Huff (Ukiah), and Fallon Hovland (Ukiah) received GPA of 4.00. Nine out of our fifteen players had a GPA of 3.00 or higher! Excellent job by the players! We would also like to wish Fallon Hovland the best as she travels up to Western Washington University to attend school and play soccer!
The coaching staff preaches to our players that the 2012 fall season will only be as good as our preseason training! We begin on January 23rd. Hard work through the spring semester and summer will build a strong foundation for next fall! The girls will be weight training three times a week and training on the field two times a week. The team will also play spring games against 4-year university soccer programs, junior college programs, and club teams. We will have games posted on the website when they are confirmed.
Finally our team will run its 2nd Annual Seven-a-Side Soccer League this spring and summer, as well as two summer soccer camps. We are expecting around 30 teams to participate in the spring league. Teams travel from Booneville, Covelo, Clearlake, Fort Brag, Kelseyville, and Willits to participate in the league! We have our players set up the fields, officiate, break down the fields, and socialize with the participants so that we can bring more awareness to our program and all of Mendocino College.
See you on the fields!
