Earth Day at Mendocino College!

The third annual Earth Day event at Mendocino College will be held on Thursday, April 22.  Each year the college hosts community informational booths as well as student participants with club information and poster presentations related to class subjects.  Guest speakers come to the college to give talks on a variety of important topics related to the environment.

This year Anank Nunink Nunkai,  from Ecuador, will talk about something that he is very passionate about:  tropical rainforest preservation.  Representatives from the county water agency will also be on hand to give presentations on the important local issues of low-impact development, rain water harvesting, and ocean acidification.  John Nickerson is a local Mendocino County connection to the international issues of carbon sequestration and forest management.  He will give a presentation reviewing some of the highlights of the cutting edge projects he is working on that bring this subject close to home.

We will be showing topical movies throughout the week, including “No Impact Man” and “The Big Energy Gamble”.  A highlight will be the showing of the movie “Fresh”.  With its limited release, the college will host two showings of this influential movie focusing on ways to reinvent the way we grow our food.  One showing will be on Earth Day, and one will be the next day on Friday, April 23 at 5:30 pm. The second showing of “Fresh” is specifically planned to encourage community members, who are expected to be working during the day on Thursday, to join us in watching this important movie. Earth Day at Mendocino College will conclude with an expected visit from Assemblyman Wesley Chesbro who will present environmental awards to both Granite Construction Company and Fetzer Vineyards.

Encouraging student involvement outside the classroom is a key component of the Earth Day event at the college.  Each year a student design is used for the event T-shirt, which will be available to purchase.  This year students are encouraged to share their experience making their way to campus by some means other than driving themselves alone in their car.

Although targeting the students, faculty and staff of the college, this event is open to the public and all from the community are welcome to attend.  See the web page for details of specific time and place for talks and movies:  .
