Earth Day!

Let's increase environmental awareness and encourage civic involvement!!!

Mendocino College will host its annual Earth Day event on Thursday, April 22nd. Campus clubs, non-profits, local green businesses and government agencies will have interactive informational displays set up around campus to update us on their green efforts.  Students will also be showcasing their environmental research with informative poster displays on such topics as global warming, soil erosion, and organic farming. Check out the schedule of speakers and films below (Note: some films will be shown on April 20 and 21)! Earth Day will be an educational, stimulating and fun day for everyone involved! We hope you'll join us!!

Speakers (All on April 22nd):

John Nickerson-  A Mendocino College faculty member and local forestry consultant will talk about managing forests for carbon sequestration and other important ecosystem services. Room 9130 at 10:00 A.M.

Dennis Slota, Joe Scriven and Becky Kress--Our local Mendocino County Water Agency representatives will bring us up to date on our local and regional water issues, rain water harvesting and ocean issues.  Please bring your questions to this fantastic talk!  Little Theater at 12:30 P.M.

Anank Nunink Nunkai--This wonderful speaker is coming from the Ecuadorian Amazon to tell us about his people, the Shuar culture, and the beautiful but threatened rainforest that is his home.  Room 9110 at 2:30 P.M.

Assemblyman Wesley Chesbro--At 4:00 P.M. Assemblyman Chesbro will present the California Waste Reduction Award to two local businesses, Granite Construction Company and Fetzer Vineyards!! If raining, in room 9110, if sunny, outside the library. 

Movies (April 20-22):

Fresh--a northern California Premier!!!  This documentary highlights farmers and businesspeople from around the country who are re-inventing our food system in a more sustainable image.  Room 1220 at 12:30 P.M. on Thursday April 22 (Earth Day).  Room 9130 at 5:30 P.M. on Friday April 23.  Please see below for a link to more information!

The Big Energy Gamble--A documentary that details California's efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions and promote clean energy by way of A.B. 32, The Global Warming Solutions Act. Room 1220 at 12:30 P.M. on Tuesday, April 20.

No Impact Man--One family's attempt to live a full year without any detrimental environmental impact.  Room 9130 at 2:30 P.M. on Wednesday April 21.

At Willits:  Food, Inc. at noon in the Public Lab.
