Accommodations for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students:

If you are Deaf, or your hearing loss is affecting classroom performance,  we encourage you to enroll for DRC services.

 

Sign Language Interpreters:

If you are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Mendocino College can provide American Sign Language Interpreting for your classes, mandatory field trips, Counselor appointments, tutoring, and  Instructor appointments.

 Students who need this accommodation must request this service each semester, by scheduling an appointment with a DRC Counselor. Deaf and Hard of Hearing students get Priority (first day) Registration; please register early, so that timely accommodations can be arranged!

 

An effective Interpreting experience requires cooperation and coordination between the College, the student and the Interpreter. Deaf or Hard of Hearing students must sign an agreement confirming the responsibilities of all parties.  The Alternate Media Specialist is the coordinator for Interpreting Services; contact them about any schedule changes, field trips, or un-scheduled absences.

 

Amplification Devices

Hard of Hearing students may benefit from amplification devices that help them function better in the classroom. Mendocino College offers two types of devices which students may check out on a semester by semester basis.

An FM system wirelessly broadcasts the instructor’s voice to the student’s headphones. In this system, the instructor wears a lapel microphone and a clip-on transmitter, and the student wears a receiver and headphones or ear buds. This is a good solution for lecture courses, because the student gets amplification of everything the instructor says, even if they are facing away from the class.  The FM system is not a good solution for courses that involve a lot of group activities or group discussion, because the student will not get amplification for significant portions of the material.

The Sound Wizard is a personal amplification device that the student can wear that will amplify all sounds. It has a directional microphone, and has an attachment to use with a standard telephone (not for cell phone.) The Sound Wizard is more confidential than the FM system, because the instructor does not have to wear any special equipment. The disadvantage is that the microphone is directional, so no sound will be picked up if the Instructor turns around to write on the chalkboard.

 

The Center Theater at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts is equipped with an Induction Loop System. This is equipment that will broadcast sound directly into a student’s hearing aids. Students or visitors who wish to use this equipment may ask any usher for a wireless receiver.

Note Takers

Students who use Sign Language Interpreting must concentrate on the interpreter and the Instructor, so they don’t miss any of the information. It is virtually impossible to take effective notes while all attention is focused on communication.

For this reason, Counselors will usually order a Note Taker as an additional accommodation for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. The DRC Counselor will explain the guidelines for creating an effective Note Taker relationship.

 

Captioning

Captioning is the process of creating a textual alternative for video materials. All media material used at Mendocino College is captioned for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This includes the Library DVD collection, and all classroom video, including online media, such as YouTube.

Ordinarily, the Instructor will not display the captions unless they have a “Letter of Accommodation” that alerts them of the student need. If you are Hard of Hearing, and have not enrolled with the DRC, the instructor probably does not know that there is a student that needs the captions turned on. If you need the captions displayed on classroom video, we recommend that you speak to the Instructor privately.
