LOCAL WRITING INSTRUCTOR JODY GEHRMAN READS
FROM HER LATEST NOVEL IN UKIAH

UKIAH, CA - The Friends of the Mendocino College Library will host a reading of Jody Gehrman's latest novel,  Triple Shot Bettys in Love, on March 19 at 7:00 P.M. in Room 5310, Mendocino College, 1000 Hensley Creek Road, Ukiah, CA.

Ms. Gehrman landed a three-book deal in 2004 that led to publication of Summer in the Land of Skin, Tart, and Notes from the Backseat. Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty, which was released by Penguin’s Dial books in 2008, was her first young adult novel. Triple Shot Bettys in Love, the sequel, continues to update classic literature with a drive-through espresso stand in Sonoma as the backdrop.

Triple Shot Bettys in Love concerns many of the same characters from the previous outing—Geena, Amber and Hero. While the previous novel’s plot was a nod to Shakespeare, this latest outing gives a nod to Cyrano de Bergerac interlaced with lattes, skateboard culture, and teen angst.

Regarding the first book, Kirkus Reviews says: “Nothing is sacred in this funny text…Adding to the humor is the teens' natural dialogue, which although tackling mature content stays light and punchy with a realistic edge.”  Regarding Gehrman’s latest effort, School Library Journal says, “Just like a cappuccino from the drive-through coffee joint where the Bettys work, this one is frothy fun. Readers don't need to have read the prior book to enjoy it, though acquaintance with the characters' history enhances the brew.”

Jody Gehrman is a native of Healdsburg, California.  After graduating from UC Santa Cruz in 1994, she traveled, freelanced, and had a number of her plays produced before going to graduate school.  She received a Master's Degree in English at Western Washington University and a Masters in Professional Writing from the University of Southern California.  She now teaches writing at Mendocino College.  Mendocino Book Company will be on hand with copies of her book and Gehrman will be signing copies of her novel following the reading.
