Mendocino College Presents New Course in Retail Management

Mendocino College is offering a new course in Retail Management, starting on Monday, January 26.  This course will provide students with an overview of management strategies for retail businesses and will cover retail promotions, visual merchandising, communications, customer service, inventory control and supervision of personnel.

Retail Management (Business 106) will fulfill an elective requirement for the Associates of Science degree in Business-Management and is also part of a national certificate in Retail Management, sponsored by the Western Association of Food Chains.

The Western Association of Food Chains Retail Management Certificate is a specially recognized college program designed to prepare individuals for the fast-paced retail industry. This program is also intended to help students develop an understanding of the retail manager's job and the requirements for success in the retail environment.

The Instructor for this class will be Shannon Riley, a local business owner and an active member of the Ukiah Main Street Program and Ukiah Chamber of Commerce.  She has roots in both teaching and retail, and as a board member for the Main Street Program, leads its Promotions Committee.

As co-owner of Shoefly and Sox in downtown Ukiah, Shannon has first-hand experience starting and running a successful retail business, as well as thriving in a down economy.

Shannon’s academic credentials include a B.A. from C.S.U. Chico and a teaching credential from Chapman University.  She also has extensive employment experience ranging from teaching at our local school district to administrative work with private corporations in San Francisco.

For additional information, visit or contact Steve Hixenbaugh at (707) 468-3220 or  The Mendocino College Counseling Department can also provide information at (707) 468-3048.
