Mendocino College Braces for Budget Cuts, Acts to Preserve Classes and Student Services

Last week, Mendocino College employees met with the President and Vice Presidents to hear about the effects of the state budget crisis.  The guiding principles the college plans to follow are to preserve classes and student services, avoid layoffs, and maintain a prudent reserve.  In the wake of news about CSU cutbacks on classes and enrollments, Mendocino will be “keeping the doors open” by cancelling classes only as a last resort.

“From the information that is available to us at this point, the impact on our operating budget could be as much as $800,000,” said Vice President of Administrative Services Larry Perryman. “That impact could easily double if the Governor’s proposals for revenue enhancements are not acceptable to the legislature.  Despite that fact that we have already made significant reductions in this year’s budget, we will try to do all that we can to minimize the impact of additional cuts on our students.”

Vice President of Education and Student Services Meridith Randall said, “We have identified only a few classes to cancel at this time; enrollment for Spring 2009 just began and we are reluctant to cut classes with students enrolled.  We would prefer to close some offices in the afternoons or take other actions that do not impede students in their academic progress.”

Students who planned to attend CSUs are encouraged to come to Mendocino College and find out about their options for transfer guarantees and other programs that allow them to complete their first two years of a four-year degree at Mendocino.  Appointments to meet with counselors can be made by calling 468-3048 and the Spring 2009 schedule is available online at www.mendocino.edu.
