GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT MENDOCINO COLLEGE COOPERATIVE WORK EXPERIENCE EDUCATION
Cooperative Work Experience Education (CWEE) is an academic program in which students earn college credit for what they learn while working at paid jobs or as volunteers (even if self-employed). Credits apply to the Associate Degree and can be transferred to 4-year California State Universities as elective credit. There are other benefits for students, as well.
Students, with the guidance of their work supervisor and CWE instructor, set their own learning objectives, which they fulfill during the semester.
Students must work 75 hours (if paid) or 60 hours (if volunteer) over the semester for each unit attempted. Students who work at least 20 hours a week can earn up to 4 units and students who work full-time can earn up to 8 units of credit in one semester. A total of 16 units can be applied to the Associates Degree as elective credit
Students whose work relates to one of the college's occupational disciplines can enroll in Occupational Work Experience for 1 to 8 units in one semester (see Occupational Work Experience disciplines list). Students whose work does not relate to one of the Occupational disciplines can enroll in General Work Experience Education for 1/2 to 3 units each semester for a total of 6 units applied to the Associates Degree as elective credit.
Students do not need to enroll in other courses in order to enroll in CWE classes. There are no class meetings required, other than an initial orientation meeting. In some cases the initial orientation meeting can be waived.
