Mendocino College RN Program
TEAS Test Information

As of Spring 2009 the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) will be given to those students who are considered for admission after normal evaluation using the Chancellor’s Office Formula which takes into account an applicants grade point averages in their science courses (anatomy, physiology, microbiology), overall GPA, and English GPA. This test will become part of the admission process for the 2-year RN Program as well as the LVN to RN Program at Mendocino College.

Those applicants that score above 80 on the Chancellor’s Office Formula will be placed into a lottery draw, and those chosen for admission will then be invited to take the test (instructions will be given at that time) and must achieve above a pre-determined cut score (67 Composite Minimum Score) to be eligible to continue in the admission process. Those applicants that do not score above the cut score will have their admission put “on hold” for one year in which they will need to remediate and successfully pass the TEAS test. Remediation could include working independently, retaking basic skills courses, or working in the learning center on campus. The TEAS test can be retaken after 6 months of remediation activities. Students who have successfully passed the TEAS test after remediation will be granted admission to the following class (1 year after their original conditional admission offer). Applicants who have previously taken the TEAS can have their scores forwarded to the Nursing Office at Mendocino College during their application period.

The TEAS test measures current content knowledge in basic essential skills in the academic content areas of Reading, Mathematics, Science, English and Language usage. These entry level skills were deemed important for nursing program applicants by a panel of curriculum experts.

The TEAS exam is a 170-item test, multiple choice exam that is given on a computer. Times and dates for the exam will be given in the conditional admission offer. Only those invited to test for Mendocino College admission will be given the ability to take the TEAS test in the college computer lab setting. We are unable at this time to allow testing for other programs.

There is a TEAS study manual that potential students can purchase to prepare for the exam, as well as other preparation materials available on line at atitesting.com. The test specifics can be obtained by going to the following web links:
