Ukiah, CA – The Mendocino College High School Equivalency Program (HEP), a federal program aimed to assist migrant and seasonal farm workers in obtaining a GED, took a fieldtrip to Monterey Bay Aquarium on February 16, 2008. Forty students and staff explored the aquarium where they visited various exhibits which included touch pools, a kelp forest, jelly fish art, sea otters and were treated to lunch on the famous Cannery Row. For many of these students, this was their first time out of the Mendocino/Lake area. “For these students who are usually busy with their other adult responsibilities, these trips provide them with the opportunity to fully participate in the college experience and engage with other students,” HEP Interim Director Minerva Flores said. This past November, HEP students were able to hear a writer from Mexico City speak at Sonoma State University. On April 19-20, HEP students will have their annual retreat at Camp Cazadero in Cazadero, CA, where they will conduct workshops on careers and self-esteem. For more information on the Mendocino College HEP program, visit www.mendocino.edu or call the main office at (707) 467-1026.
