Doug Browe and his class in the ceramics department will be setting up some wheels and doing some hands on with kids throwing “earth”! "If you grind the whole lithosphere of the earth you end up with a good clay body!!!" "The ceramics department will also be presenting information on the water problems in the third world, and the groups that are addressing that problem though hand made, low tech ceramic water filters. We will have promotional pamphlets, presentation boards, and actual water filters for students to interact with." Doug Rachel Donham's physiology and microbiology classes will be presenting posters on the following topics and linking these to global warming: chemicals in water, ice cap melting, organic vs. inorganic foods, West Nile Virus, Water supply, vector-borne diseases, Dengue Fever, Cholera, Mercury and pregnancy, sun and skin damage, Dioxin, Obesity, MRSA, Hormones in fast food, bioremediation of oil spills, necrotizing fasciitis, handwashing, bacteriophages and global warming. Phil Warf's American Government Classes will propose petitions on topics that relate to the environment. They will be obtaining signatures on these petitions and they will be submitted to different levels of government: federal, state or local. On Earth Day, the petitions will be on display and ready for more signatures; also, representatives from the classes will be available to discuss their issue and their experiences doing their grassroots work. Steve Cardimona's Envrionmental Science class (EAS/NRS) will be studying alternative energy resources and his Geology (EAS/GEL 201) students will be studying nonrenewable resources. Additionally, students in Steve's Weather and Climate class (EAS 211/PSC 210) will be studying components of climate change. Susan Bell will have computers set up in room 1270 linked to Earth Day information and questionnaires. Do you know what you ecological footprint is? Come find out! Nancy McLelland's critical thinking class will also participate! Terri Robertson's Written Communications class will also be encouraged to create PowerPoint presentations about Earth Day. Chris Ineich's Soil Science class will be presenting information about composting, soil degradation and more!
