MENDOCINO COLLEGE

PETITION FOR CREDIT BY EXAMINATION

ELIGIBILITY:

  1. Credit by Examination may be granted only:

a. to a student who is currently enrolled at Mendocino College.

b. to a student who has successfully completed a minimum of 12 semester units of college work with a grade point average of 2.0 or better.

c. to a student not on academic probation.

d. to a student who has not earned college credit in more advanced subject matter.

e. to a student who has met identified prerequisite(s)/corequisite(s).

REGULATIONS:

  1. The student’s academic records shall be clearly annotated to reflect that the units and grade were earned by examination.
  2. Units earned under credit by examination shall not be counted in determining the 12 semester units of resident credit needed for Associate Degree.
  3. Units earned under credit by examination are not considered part of the student’s official program and will not be used for registration certification to Social Security, the Veterans Administration, or similar agencies.
  4. Credit by examination can only be taken for a letter grade with the exception of those courses designated for credit/no credit only. Courses taken for credit by examination meet major requirements, except those courses designated credit/no credit only.
  5. Courses where credit by examination is earned may not be repeated for credit by classroom attendance unless a substandard grade is earned (D, F or NC.) A grade of incomplete may not be assigned.
  6. Each course designated may be challenged only once. (See current catalog for courses approved for Credit by Examination.)
  7. A maximum of 12 units of credit may be earned by examination.
PROCEDURE:
  1. Student gets Petition for Credit by Examination from Admissions and Records (verification of eligibility required at this time.)
  2. Student meets with instructor to schedule exam. Instructor sign petition.
  3. Student brings petition to Dean of Instruction for approval.
  4. Instruction Office (Class Scheduler) applies section number.
  5. Student returns signed petition to Admissions and Records. A check or money order ($30.00 per unit) must accompany the petition to complete the registration process.
  6. Admissions and Records will enroll and provide receipt to student and completed form to Instructor.
  7. The instructor will assign a letter grade (with the exception of those courses designated for Credit/No Credit only) mark it on the petition, and return the petition to Admissions and Records who will post grade.
  8. A copy of the petition will be retained (scanned) in the Admissions and Records Office.

DEADLINE: The Petition for Credit by Examination must be made prior to the end of the fourth week of the semester. The examination must be administered prior to the last day of the final examination period.
