College & UCLO Seek Performers for Grease
Ukiah, CA –The Mendocino College Theatre Arts Department and Ukiah Civic Light Opera will hold auditions on Saturday December 16 for the upcoming Spring 2007 production of the hit musical Grease. The production will be directed by Mendocino College professor Les Pfutzenreuter, with musical direction by Kathryn Allan and choreography Leslie Saxon West.
Grease brings to life Rydall High’s spirited class of 1959—gum-chewing, hub-cap-stealing, hot-rod loving boys with D.A.’s and their wisecracking girls in bobby sox and pedal pushers. As hip Danny Zuko and wholesome Sandy Dumbrowski resolve the problems of their mutual attraction, the ensemble sings and dances its way through such nostalgic scenes as the pajama party, the prom, the burger palace and the drive-in movie. With book, music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs & Warren Casey, this show has been a hit ever since its original eight year run on Broadway.
The rehearsals will begin in mid-January and continue until the show opens on March 30, 2007. Performances will run through April 7. The production will be directed by Mendocino College theatre professor Les Pfutzenreuter with musical direction by Kathryn Allan. Leslie Saxon West will choreograph the production’s dance sequences.
There will be an important informational meeting on Wednesday December 13 at 6 PM in Mendocino College’s Center Theatre for everybody with an interest in working on the show. Audition appointments will be scheduled at this meeting. Everybody who auditions will need to sing, dance and act. However, no previous training or experience in these areas is needed.
Initial singing and dancing auditions will take place on Saturday December 16 from 10 AM – 3 PM (by appointment) on the Mendocino College Ukiah campus. Singing auditions will be held in the Voice Room (room 5310). Dance auditions will be held in the large dance studio (room 820).
For the singing audition, performers should prepare a short song (under 1 minute) from a Broadway musical. An accompanist will be provided. Singers should bring sheet music for their chosen selection or be prepared to sing a cappella. The song will be the initial acting audition as well as the singing audition, so choosing a character song with dramatic content will be helpful.
For the dancing auditions, performers are asked to wear comfortable clothes and to be prepared to learn a short dance routine that will be performed with a group during the audition.
Performers should also save Sunday December 17 for call-backs from 10 AM-2 PM.
In addition to the performance opportunities, numerous backstage production positions are also available. Crews are needed to build scenery, props and costumes as well as to work as assistant stage managers, light and sound operators and run-crew. For those with a particular interest in learning to build costumes, there will be a costume construction course taught by Kathy Dingman Katz in association with this production. This fun class will meet Tuesday evenings from 5:30-9:30 PM during Mendocino College’s Spring semester. People interested in joining the Grease production team should attend the informational meeting on December 13.
