“Visions of Sugarplums Dance in Their Heads”

December 16 & 17 Performances

The Mendocino Ballet is busy rehearsing one of the holiday season’s favorite traditions, “The Nutcracker”.  A joyous Christmas celebration at the home of Clara and Fritz where beautiful life-size dolls and a dancing bear entertain the guests, an action packed battle scene between mice and toy soldiers, a Nutcracker who turns into a handsome prince, are but a few of the surprises in the first act of this classic ballet.  The Nutcracker Prince then leads Clara into the magical land of Snow and on to the Kingdom of Sweets where exotic performers from far away lands dance in the court of the Sugar Plum Fairy.  The Nutcracker comes to life under the direction of Mendocino Ballet’s Artistic Director, Trudy McCreanor with beautiful sets, colorful costumes and exciting choreography.  This is truly a delightful holiday treat, certain to enchant an audience of all ages!

In Ukiah, performances are Saturday, December 16th and Sunday, December 17 at 2 pm and 7 pm at the Mendocino College Center Theatre.  Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors 65 and older, and $8 for children 12 and under.  Tickets can be purchased at the Mendocino Ballet or Mendocino Book Company in Ukiah and the Goods’ Stamp Shoppe in Willits.

Fourteen year old Noë Klein of Philo will dance the role of Clara with Michael Miller of Ukiah as the Nutcracker/Prince.  Jeff Barkley of Hopland will perform as the mysterious Drosselmeyer, Clara’s eccentric Godfather.  Sarah Martin of Ukiah will dance as Fritz, the mischievous brother of Clara, with Leslie and Don Barkley of Hopland as Clara’s and Fritz’s parents.

Melissa Payne, a professional Ballet Dancer in the Bay area will perform the magical role of the Sugar Plum Fairy.  Mendocino Ballet Company Principal Dancers Ashley Marrow, who dances as the Snow Queen and the Mouse Queen, and Kelly Enberg, who will dance as the Rose Queen in the “Waltz of the Flowers”, will be joined by Soloist Kelsey Hernandez, and Corps dancers Morgan Cummings, Jordan Steckter, Marieclaire Wilcox, Emily Baugus, Meredith Cabaniss, Sarah Matossian, and Makaela NivesO’Connell.  Apprentice dancers Abril Anderson, Colette Cabaniss and Laura Franzen are joined by young dancers Annika Gordon, Natalie Grossman, Alexandria Sadlier and Grace Spoljaric along with other dancers from the Mendocino Ballet dance program and local children and adult dancers and actors from Ukiah, Fort Bragg, Point Arena and the surrounding communities to form a cast of talented and entertaining performers.
