Join us for an informative and exciting day with this Japanese born, California Ceramic Artist. Working in the Oakland area for the last 4 decades, Ryusei’s ceramic work now bridges 3 continents. His functional pottery can be found in the homes and restaurants in the United States, England and Japan. His work has been the feature of solo exhibitions in Japanese Museums and has works in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The Museum of Contemporary Craft in New York.
Ryusei worked with the famous ceramic artist Peter Voulkos as his apprentice and assistant from 1966-1968. It was during this time he earned his BFA from the California College of Arts and Design.
In 1994 Ryusei built an anagama wood fired kiln in Elk Valley, Mendocino County. It is this tool that is central to, and the focus of, his current work in ceramics.
Join the Ceramics Club of Mendocino College in welcoming this artist as he demonstrates the making of his pottery and talks of his history, style and techniques. Ryusei will also answer questions about his work and show slides at this day long workshop.
A $5 donation will be charged for the workshop. Bring a potluck dish to pass, or an additional $5 for a shared lunch.
