Friends of Mendocino College Library
present Jean Hegland Reading

jean hegland Ukiah, CA – Friends of the Mendocino College Library are sponsoring a reading by author Jean Hegland at the college’s Little Theater in the Lowery Library Building on Monday, October 9, at 7:00 PM. This event is free.

Hegland is the author of three books. Her first book was The Life Within: Celebration of a Pregnancy, was published by The Humana Press in 1991. Excerpts from The Life Within have been reprinted in a college English textbook, a high school science textbook, and a book about journal-keeping for pregnant women.

Her first novel, Into the Forest, was published by Calyx Books in 1996 and by Bantam in 1997. Into the Forest has been translated into a dozen languages, and has been selected by College of the Redwoods to be its Book of the Year for 1999-2000, by Bowling Green State University to be its “First Year Experience” book for 2001 and 2006, and by Firelands College to be its All College Book for fall, 2006. Into the Forest is frequently taught at colleges and universities in classes ranging from remedial reading to graduate courses in eco-feminism. It chronicles two sisters, Nell and Eva, who must learn to survive in the Northern California forest when the electricity goes off, phones go out, and all of society seems to have stopped.

Hegland’s second novel, Windfalls was published by Simon & Schuster (USA), Random House UK (England), and Kruger-Verlag (Germany) in 2004. It also received critical acclaim. She is currently completing a third novel (and beginning a fourth).

She has spoken, read, led workshops, and taught classes at numerous writing conferences. In the spring of 2003, she spent a month as Writer-in-Residence at the College of York St. John in York, England, and in the winters of 2003 and 2004, she taught creative writing for the Mediterranean Center for Arts and Sciences in Sicily.

Friends of the Mendocino College Library is an associate group of the Mendocino College Foundation. To find out more about this event or other Friends activities, contact John Koetzner at 468-3051 or at jkoetzne@mendocino.edu .
