Internationally Known Dance Company Helps Celebrate
National Dance Week in Mendocino County
UKIAH, CA - AXIS Dance Company, world renowned dance company based in Oakland, California, will be celebrating National Dance Week at Mendocino College on April 28, 29 and 30. “We are delighted to be hosting this innovative and exciting dance group” says Leslie Saxon West, Director of Dance at Mendocino College.
Since 1987, AXIS Dance Company has created an exciting body of work developed by dancers with and without disabilities. They are in the forefront of paving the way for a powerful and inclusive dance form; “physically integrated dance”. Described as a visual and physical discovery, creating fascinating works of movement art, the company has become internationally known for its high artistic and educational standards and innovative movement vocabulary. They have performed all over the world, presenting works by such well known choreographers as Bill T. Jones, Joe Goode, Stephen Petronio and Joanna Haigood.
AXIS will be performing in the 5th annual Mendocino College Spring Dance Festival on April 28 and 29 at 7:30 PM and April 30 at 2:00 PM in the Center Theatre in Ukiah campus, and will also be presenting a community dance workshop on Saturday, April 29 from 1:00-3:00 PM in the large dance studio (room 820) on the Mendocino College Ukiah campus. The workshop is for disabled and non disabled individuals with exposure to choreography and improvisation techniques. Participants must be able to listen to and follow directions easily and initiate movement on their own. Portions of dances from AXIS repertoire will be included in this workshop. The fee for the movement workshop is $10.
Those who are interested in participating in the workshop may pre-register by calling 707-468-3079 or may pay at the door. Tickets for the Spring Dance Festival are $7 for everyone, and may be purchased in advance at the Mendocino Book Company on School St. in Ukiah, the Mendocino College Bookstore or by calling 707 468-3079.
