Classes & Programs > Tech Prep > How does Tech Prep Work?

Tech Prep offers specially designed high school courses that work together to give you solid skills in communication, math, science, technology and Spanish, while you are gaining technical job skills. In traditional classes, you may forget things you've learned after taking a test. Tech Prep classes let you use what you learn as you learn it.

The experience that Tech Prep offers isn't limited to the classroom. While you are learning in school, you will be spending some afternoons and weekends learning firsthand on the job at a local business or service agency. Tech Prep students get the chance to gain work experience and explore careers in their areas of interest in at least three different sites. Work experience is unpaid to begin with, but you will be in a paid position before you finish the program. Instead of daydreaming about the kind of work you think you want to do, you will be finding out about it--firsthand!

By the time you leave the program, you will have earned a high school diploma and a Mendocino College Associate Degree or Certificate--with special Tech Prep honors; received verification of skills competencies and job readiness from local businesses and/or agencies, and developed a professional portfolio that shows what you have done and can do with the skills and knowledge you have. You will have work experience in your chosen field, and an understanding of career options that will make it easier for you to move up when promotion time comes. And if you decide to go on for an advanced degree or more training, your experience will put you at the head of the class.
