Lake Center

The Mendocino College Lake County Center, our local link to the California Community College System, offers a healthy selection of community college classes, programs and services to Lake County residents.

From our modern 10,000 square foot facility on Parallel Drive in Lakeport, our faculty and staff serve the residents of northern Lake County including the communities of Kelseyville, Lakeport, Upper Lake, Nice, Lucerne, and Glenhaven. Our 30-year presence in beautiful Lake County reflects the Mendocino College commitment to providing district-wide access to the California Community College System close to home, whether you happen to live in the thriving lakeside metropolis of Lakeport itself, in smaller places such as Blue Lakes, Cobb, or Finley, near the pear and walnut orchards of rural Scotts Valley, Witter Springs and Bachelor Valley, or all by yourself along the shores of Clear Lake in the shadow of majestic Mount Konocti.

Faculty and staff at the Mendocino College Lake County Center take great pride in offering affordable California community college classes and support services in ways that reflect the small-town character, interests and sensibilities of rural Lake County. Like the rest of our neighbors, we appreciate "the personal touch" in our dealings with others, and you'll find a welcoming smile and a friendly atmosphere to greet you at the Lake County Center.

The Lake County Center is part of the Mendocino-Lake Community College District, and one of two off-campus centers operated by Mendocino College - our sister center is in Willits. Each semester, the Lake County Center offers day and evening college-credit classes in many academic disciplines including Agriculture, Art, Biology, Business, Business Office Technology, Child Development, Computer Science, Dance, English, Fire Science, French, Geography, Geology, Guidance, Health, History, Mathematics, Music, Philosophy, Physical Education, Political Science, Physical Sciences, Psychology, Real Estate, Sign Language, Sociology, Spanish and more.

Through its varied instructional programs, student and community services, the Mendocino College Lake County Center works to reflect the regional characteristics and strengths of the communities it serves. Staff works closely with Lake County Center faculty, most of whom are residents of Lake County, to plan and develop each semester's schedule of classes. Individual community needs have also been addressed in programming and class schedule development, and we work regularly with a cross-section of community partners to develop our college center's programs. Through the Lake County Higher Education Partnership, we also work with the Lake County Office of Education and the Clear Lake Campus of Yuba College to provide opportunities in higher education to all Lake county residents.

Unlike larger educational institutions, which are sometimes characterized by huge classes and impersonal services, our Lake County Center provides a friendly and accessible atmosphere for new or returning college students. Our faculty and office staff offer continuing education and support services that lead to college degrees, certificates, improved job skills, transfers to other colleges and universities, personal enrichment and lifelong learning.

Mindful of the need to support and encourage the younger members of our Lake County community, Mendocino College does not charge unit fees for high school students. They can now extend their education by enrolling in Lake County Center classes at no unit cost.

Lake County Center students can choose from a wide selection of academic and vocational classes, general education courses, and lower division college classes required for transfer to four-year institutions. The Lake County Center provides the first two years of general education courses for nearly all majors and Lake students can also obtain their two year community college degree by taking classes at the Center.

Degrees, certificates and occupational training offered through the Lake County Center consist of:

  • Associate of Arts degrees - Art (Painting), General Studies, English, Liberal Arts, Psychology, Social Science and Speech;
  • Associate of Science degrees - Administrative Assistant, Business Accounting, Business Administration, Business/Small Business Management and Child Development/Family Relations;
  • Certificates of Achievement - Business Accounting, Business/Small Business Management, Business Office Technology/Legal, Business Office Technology/Medical and ChildDevelopment/Family Relations;
  • Special Occupational Training - Continuing Education for Nurses, Cooperative Work Experience, Emergency Medical Technician Training, Lifeguard Training, and Fire Personnel Training.

Student services provided by the Lake County Center include admissions and registration, academic counseling, student assessments, financial aid planning, textbook and study supply sales. The Center also offers Extended Opportunities Programs and Services (EOPS) counseling and workshops, Cooperative Work Experience, Contract Education training for local businesses, disabled student services and referrals, Distance Education, Internet access and instructional links to new college online classes, scholarship information for Lake County residents, tutoring services, Community Extension activities, and connections to college faculty and services at the main campus in Ukiah and the college center in Willits.

In addition to our spacious classrooms and instructional computer labs with up to date equipment, the Lake County Center's Learning Lab is outfitted with distance education tapes, viewing stations, student assessment services, Internet access links to library services at the Ukiah campus, a student study area and other support facilities.

Lake County Center staff includes a full time academic counselor offering free student counseling and outreach services to local high schools and other community groups. A full time computer lab technician supports student and faculty computer use and other instructional technology support services in Lake County.

Future goals for the Lake County Center include seeking land and funding for the eventual development and construction of a permanent Lake County facility, development of Lake County Center projects in cooperation with the Mendocino College Foundation, addition of new faculty and student services, and exploring ways to develop and sustain new community-based partnerships with local businesses, public agencies and other Lake County residents.

Our Center's welcoming main hallway is a showcase for works of art by Lake County Center college students. Each work reveals a blend of personal creativity, expression and accomplishment by individual students and reflects the magic of all our faculty and students working together to realize the dream of student success. That's what we're all about at the Mendocino College Lake County Center. It's never too soon (or too late!) to start thinking about what higher education can do for you. Please join us at the Mendocino College Lake County Center.
