Laudenslayer signs with Thundering Herd
By JOE LANGSTAFF The Daily Journal
Article Launched: 12/19/2008 12:35:35 PM
Early yesterday morning, in the football offices of Mendocino College, Jacob Laudenslayer took the next step in his football career when he signed to officially accept a full scholarship to attend Marshall University and play quarterback for the university's football team, a member of the major college Conference USA. The University is located in Huntington, West Virginia. The football team, The Thundering Herd plays in the conference's East Division with teams including East Carolina, Memphis Southern Mississippi, the University of Alabama-Birmingham, and the University of Central Florida. It's schedule also includes games with the conference's West Division teams including Tulsa, Rice, Houston, UTEP and Tulane, as well as other major colleges, which this season included Wisconsin, Illinois State, Cincinnati and West Virginia, the Herd's big intrastate rival.
Yesterday was the early signing day for junior college players when they could officially commit to a college or university. Several colleges had shown interest in recruiting Laudenslayer including California, Arizona State, Washington State, Louisville, New Mexico State and Middle Tennessee State. The recruiting process involved film exchanges, phone calls to the coaches, letters, visits by coaches, scouts, starting in the summer. In the last week, recruiters called every day.
The decision to attend Marshall was made by Laudenslayer after a visit to the school last Thursday and Friday. As he put it, he "fell in love" with the University and college-town atmosphere it offered. The academic and athletic programs also impressed him. Asked if he had seen the 2006 movie "We are Marshall", starring Matthew McConaughey, which tells the story of the rebuilding of the Marshall football program after the tragic 1970 plane crash that killed nearly all of the Thundering Herd football team, he said that he had, and he respected the rich tradition the University has developed since. He will enroll at the University for the spring semester, starting on January 12.
He appreciates the opportunity he had to play and develop his skills at Mendocino College. He offered thanks to the coaching staff and his teammates for helping him have success as an Eagle football player. He was not recruited out of high school by four-year colleges or even his local community college in Modesto. He checked around and discovered, that unlike many junior colleges that recruit players just to play for a couple years, Mendocino College has developed a good track record of helping its players continue their education and football careers at four year colleges after playing for the Eagles. Now he has become one more example of Mendocino's successful efforts in that endeavor.
Laudenslayer, voted Offensive Back of the Year by his teammates, was also was selected All Mid Empire Conference at quarterback. He had a superb sophomore season throwing for 2,884 yards, 30 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. He's looking forward to the challenge of continuing his carrier at a major four-year college. His mother, who attended the signing, is very proud of her son, knowing how hard he worked to achieve his success. She's very happy and looking forward to the next step in his career. She plans to take some trips back to watch him play, although many of the Thundering Herd's games are televised and available on cable and satellite programming.
Though he will miss having Laudenslayer playing quarterback for him, Head Coach and Interim Athletic Director Tom Gang, is extremely pleased to see Laudenslayer continuing his career at Marshall University. One of the top goals of the program at Mendocino is "to help the players to transfer to the next level, four year colleges and universities, with scholarships." Laudenslayer's signing is the first, but is not expected to be the last for this year's Eagle football team.
