Course Description

This course will cover principles of astronomical observation and measurement, identification of constellations and celestial phenomenon, and astronomical tracking and coordinate systems.

  • Textbook Information: None.  You will need a copy of the Starry Night College software in order to complete exercises.  ~$30
  • Estimated Time per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 8 hours per week reading and using the Starry Night College software to complete simulated observational exercises. This class is self-paced.  Dues date guidelines will be provided, and all work is due by 8/1/13.
  • Special Requirements: Log into ETUDES by the first day of class (6/24) and begin working on the first week’s assignments.
  • Assignments & Tests: Assignments will include reading the lessons posted online and performing the exercises using the software.  Answers to the exercises will be input on the ETUDES website.
  • Additional Comments: The entire course will be conducted online through the ETUDES course management system. Students are required to have Internet access, an active email account, the ability to use word processing, conduct Internet searches, attach files, send emails and private messages, and work independently.
  • New to ETUDES: Here is an Online Orientation (Flash presentation opens in a new window) that will show you the basics of how to use ETUDES. Here is a flash tutorial (Flash presentation opens in a new window) that demonstrates the log in protocol. Be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES.
