Summer 2010 MTH 56 (5 Units)

Course Description: Fundamental properties and operations of the set of real and complex numbers; linear and quadratic equations and inequalities; polynomials; factoring polynomials; rational expressions; exponents and roots; relations; functions and inverse functions; the Cartesian Coordinates System and linear functions; conic sections; systems of equations and inequalities; matrices, determinants, and Cramer’s Rule; exponential and logarithmic functions; sequences and series; and the Binomial Theorem.
Prerequisite: MTH 55 of qualification for MTH 56 through the assessment process.

Textbook Information:
Required Textbook/MyMathLab Access Code - Options include:
Textbook, bundled with MyMathLab Access Code Intermediate Algebra for College Students, Fifth Edition, Blitzer.
Stand Alone MyMathLab Access Code: Provides an electronic version of the textbook. Although this is a less expensive way to take the course, since everything needed to complete the course is online, the downside is that you must be online to study.
Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 17 to 26 hours per week reading, writing, and taking quizzes and participating in online class discussions.

Do I need to install any special software or plug-ins?

Adobe Shockwave® - Needed to view animations in some courses.
Apple® QuickTime® - Needed to view the tutorial videos and animations that accompany your course, or hear audio files in any of 30 audio, video, and image formats, including Flash.
Java™ plug-in - Needed to view the Virtual Classroom and Chat sessions in CourseCompass.
RealNetworks® RealPlayer™ - Needed to watch streamed media animations in some courses.
TestGen Player plug-in - Needed to view and take online TestGen tests in CourseCompass.

Computer Hardware/Software Requirements - If you have any other computer configuration, call MyMathLab Product Support at 1-800-677-6337 to be sure yours will work in this course:
Operating system (PCs only/will not work with MACs): Windows® 2000 and Windows XP; Memory: 64 MB RAM minimum; Monitor resolution: 1024 x 768 or higher.
Internet connection: Cable/DSL, T1, or other high-speed for multimedia content; 56k modem (minimum) for tutorials, homework, and testing.
Browsers and Plug-ins/Players: Internet browser: Microsoft® Internet Explorer, 6.0. Plug-ins/Players (IE7.0 for Vista OS): Install from the MyMathLab Installation Wizard online.
Pop-Up Blockers: To be able to access various features in the online content, you MUST disable any Pop-Up Blocker software (or hit Ctrl + the blocked link).
Calculator Policy –Basic calculators needed for lectures and to check homework, but no calculators are allowed on quizzes and tests.
