After the class has started, please use Etudes Private Messages for communication.
  • Textbook Information:
Hirschberg, S. and Hirschberg, T. (Eds.), The New Millennium Reader, 5th Edition.
    Recommended Texts: Pocket dictionary/thesaurus
  • Estimated Time per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 10 to 12 hours per week in reading, writing, online assignments, and online class discussions.   You are completing sixteen weeks of work in eight weeks, so try not to be too ambitious by taking more classes than you can manage.  This course makes demands on your time, which means that you must allow for all your responsibilities and at least some recreation.
  • Special Requirements: Email the instructor after you sign up for the class. Log into Etudes the first day of class (6/21).
  • Assignments & Tests:
Points will be given for all essays/writing assignments in your on-line Writing Portfolio in Turnitin.com and will be calculated into a letter grade.  Written assignments will be graded according to the 6-Trait Model for writing.  All assignments are given a point value.  For example, a holistic score on a paper of 4 is equivalent to an 80 points (B grade) for that paper.  Sixty percent of your grade is your Writing Portfolio in Turnitin.com; 40% of your grade are the assignments in Peer Review; Assignment, Tasks, and Surveys (AT&S).
    Reading Assignments:
Students will be required to read weekly assignments. Reading may include a full length work of literature or non-fiction. In addition, there will be assigned library research related to the research paper.

Writing Assignments: The standard expectation for the course is a minimum of 6,000 words of written work, distributed among no fewer than three revised essays, plus a longer research paper

Outside Assignments: The major course requirement in addition to assigned
essays is the research paper.  Each week, you must read all readings and modules. Based on the readings and the modules, there will be assignments located in 3 places: the Module, Assignments, Tasks, and Surveys (AT&S) and in the Discussion Section.  Also, all papers (rough and final drafts) must be uploaded into Turnitin.com (see due dates in Turnitin.com).
  • Additional Comments: The entire course will be conducted online through the Etudes program. You should have Internet access, an active email account, and you should be able to use word processing, conduct Internet searches, attach files, send emails, and work independently.  You will have help with research and writing, citing sources using MLA style and format for your papers, and you can rely on guidance to help you complete the course successfully.
  • New to ETUDES: Here is an Online Orientation (Flash presentation opens in a new window) that will show you the basics of how to use ETUDES. Here is a flash tutorial (Flash presentation opens in a new window) that demonstrates the log in protocol. Be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES.
