  • Instructor:  K. Dawson
  • Email:    kdawson@mendocino.edu
After the class has started, please use Etudes Private Messages for communication.
  • Textbook Information:
Mauk, John, and John Metz.  The Composition of Everyday Life:  A Guide to Writing.   3rd edition.  Boston:  Wadsworth Cengage Learning, 2010.
    ISBN:  978-0-495-80203-7
The book costs about $106.00, but I recommend buying your book from an online source (which will be cheaper), or renting your book through www.CHEGG.com  or another textbook rental company.   Renting is easy, inexpensive, and most convenient if you get your book before the class begins.  CHEGG.com charges about $20.00, perhaps less, for the entire time you use the book, and also provides you with the packaging materials to return it when the course is over.    Another possible rental source is www.Cengage.com  -- they have just begun a rental service, too, but I don’t know what they are charging.   Get in touch with me by email if you need suggestions for obtaining your book.
  • Estimated Time per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 10 to 12 hours per week in reading, writing, online assignments, and online class discussions.   You are completing sixteen weeks of work in eight weeks, so try not to be too ambitious by taking more classes than you can manage.  This course makes demands on your time, which means that you must allow for all your responsibilities and at least some recreation.
  • Special Requirements: Email the instructor after you sign up for the class. Log into Etudes the first day of class (6/21).   I hope to be in touch with you before the first day.  In fact, I’m looking forward to meeting you online!
  • Assignments & Tests:  Students will complete:
    Eight weekly online assignments
    Eight weekly online discussions
A research paper that uses the library’s databases for research
    A mid-term essay
    A final essay
  • Additional Comments: The entire course will be conducted online through the Etudes program. You should have Internet access, an active email account, and you should be able to use word processing, conduct Internet searches, attach files, send emails, and work independently.  You will have help with research and writing, citing sources using MLA style and format for your papers, and you can rely on guidance to help you complete the course successfully.
  • New to ETUDES: Here is an Online Orientation (Flash presentation opens in a new window) that will show you the basics of how to use ETUDES. Here is a flash tutorial (Flash presentation opens in a new window) that demonstrates the log in protocol. Be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES.
  • ETUDES Course: You will log into the Etudes classroom with the log-in information provided below.
