Summer Session ENG 205 – Critical Thinking (3 units)

Course Description

• Learn to read and comprehend essays and articles to develop your analytical skills
• Further your ability to develop and communicate reasoned opinions
• Learn to write the argument essay using strong logical thought and clear prose
• Define and explain extended arguments
• Understand fallacies and faulty reasoning
• Improve your appreciation for language and the challenges/pitfalls of communication
• Understand and demonstrate all aspects of goal setting
• Learn to recognize and appreciate differences of opinion and thought pertaining to various topics via the online Discussion Board and Chat Rooms

• After class has started, please use Etudes Private Messages for communication.
• Textbook Information: Thinking Critically  by John Chaffee, EIGHTH EDITION.
• Estimated Time per Week:  Students can expect to spend approximately 9 to 12 hours per week reading, writing, taking quizzes and participating in the Discussion Board. This is a full 17-week semester course being offered in a six week format!
• Special Requirements: Email the instructor after you sign up for the class. Log into Etudes the first day of class (6/23).   No campus meetings are required for this course.
• Assignments & Tests: Students will be required to participate in on-line discussions, read assigned textbook chapters and on-line material, take chapter quizzes and write several essays.
• Additional Comments: The entire course will be conducted online through the Etudes program. Students are required to have Internet access, an active email account, the ability to use word processing, conduct Internet searches, send emails, and work independently.  Successful students will have time management skills.
• New to Etudes: Here is an Online Orientation (Flash presentation opens in a new window) that will show you the basics of how to use Etudes. Here is a flash tutorial (Flash presentation opens in a new window) that demonstrates the log in protocol. Be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with Etudes. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through Etudes.
