Spring 2014    MTH 220 - Statistics (4.0 units)

Course Description

This course will cover methods of descriptive and inferential statistics, including measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion, elementary probability theory, probability distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, linear and multiple regression, correlation, multinomial experiments, contingency tables, and analysis of variance. Statistical software, methods of data collection and a wide variety of applications taken from science, business, social science, and many diverse fields will be used to illustrate the theory.

Recommended Prep: With a minimum grade of C or better, one year of high school Algebra II; or a higher-level math class with a C or better, taken within three years of enrollment; or MTH 56 or qualification for MTH 220 through the assessment process.

    Textbook Information: Required: MyLab access code (~$90). Recommended: TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator (~$100). Optional: Elementary Statistics: 12th Edition (regular or Tech Update edition), by Mario Triola, ISBN: 0-321-83696-0, ~$200;
  • Estimated Time per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 12 hours per week reading, working on assignments, taking quizzes and participating in online class discussions.  This class is not self-paced.  Specific assignments and discussions are meant to be completed for the whole class at the same time.
  • Special Requirements: Log into ETUDES by the first day of class (1/21), read the orientation, and get the Course ID. Then go to http://pearsonmylabandmastering.com, register using your Access Code and the Course ID, and begin working on the first week’s assignment and discussion.
  • Assignments & Tests: Approximately daily homework; approximately weekly quizzes; weekly Discussion Board participation; a cumulative Final Exam. See syllabus or Assignments in MyLab for more detail.
  • Additional Comments: After an initial login to eTudes to read the orientation and get the access code, the entire course will be conducted online through the MyLab system. Students are required to have Internet access, an active email account, send emails and private messages, and work independently on a schedule.
