Spring 2013 Introduction to Unix I (1.5 units)

Course Description
This course will present a survey of Unix/Linux operating systems and related subject matter. Topics include Unix/ Linux architecture, commands, file system, processes, and shell programming. The textbook and laboratory exercises provide a moderate understanding of Unix/Linux architecture and commands.

- Textbook Information: A Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming (2nd Edition), Mark G. Sobell, ISBN 0131367366, approximate cost: $50
- Estimated Time per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 9 hours per week reading, working on assignments, taking quizzes and participating in online class discussions.
- Special Requirements: Log into ETUDES by the first day of class (1/22) and begin working on the first week’s assignment and discussion.
- Assignments & Tests: Each week students will read assigned portions of the textbook and perform lab exercises. This class has quizzes and a final exam.
- Additional Comments: The entire course will be conducted online through the ETUDES course management system. Students are required to have Internet access, an active email account, the ability to use word processing, conduct Internet searches, attach files, send emails and private messages, and work independently.
