Course Description

Explores the fascinating branch of psychology that studies and treats mental illness and psychological disorders. Through readings, videos and discussion, many important topics will be covered including: the acute and chronic stress; anxiety disorders; psychosomatic illness; personality disorders; substance abuse disorders; sexual disorders; depression; bi-polar disorder; schizophrenia; eating disorders; childhood disorders; therapy and treatment; and prevention of psychological disorders.

Recommended Prep: English 80 or placement into English 200 through assessment process; Psychology 205

  Video Series: The World of Abnormal Psychology
• Estimated Time Required per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 6 hours per week reading, watching videos, and interacting with the instructor via email, phone, or in-person office visits.
• Special Requirements: Please attend the orientation on January 30, 10:30-11:50 where you will receive the class syllabus, a preview of the material, and answers to any questions you might have.  
• Assignments & Tests: Independent reading of the assigned text; watching and studying video programs related to the text readings; attending orientation and three, 3-hour review, discussion and exam sessions (see below); interacting with the instructor via email, phone, or in-person office visits, as needed; and completing a take-home essay assignment.  All course requirements are detailed in the course syllabus.  
• Additional Comments: This is a distance education video course. The video programs serve as “lectures” that accompany the textbook reading and studying. Students will meet with the instructor 4 times during the semester for review, discussion, and exams.
•  Class meetings will be held on 1/30/10 (from 10:30-11:50 – orientation), and on 3/6, 4/17, and 5/15 from 1:00 - 3:50 in Room 730 (Library Building). Video programs may be viewed at the Ukiah campus Learning Center, and at both College Centers (Willits and Lakeport), or using Video on Demand (VoD) at www.learner.org. A complete set of DVDs or VHS programs may also be rented (for a $55 fee) at www.actmedia.org or 1-800-745-5480.
