Spring 2010 BOT 51, Medical Transcription I (2 units)
Section 0825. Class begins January 25, 2010
Course Description: Basic and advanced medical terminology. Transcription of the medical terminology in history and physical reports, discharge summaries, radiology reports, and consultations.
This is an open entry/open exit course.
Recommended prep: BOT 50 (Medical Terminology). BOT 100.2 (Typing II). BOT 120 (Word Processing I).

- Medical Transcription: Techniques, Technologies, and Editing Skills, 3rd ed. Alice G. Ettinger and Blanche Ettinger. (ISBN 978-0-76383-106-6)
- Strongly recommended: The Book of Style for Medical Transcription, 3rd ed. Lea Sims, AHDI. (ISBN 978-0-935229-58-5)
- Estimated time per week: Students can expect to spend 4 to 6 hours per week reading, taking quizzes, transcribing practice dictations, and participating in online discussions.
- Special requirements: Students will perform transcription either in campus lab or from home with purchase of personal headset and footpedal. High-speed internet connection needed. Please email the instructor after enrolling.
- Additional comments: Medical Transcription requires self-motivation and self-discipline. Online coursework will prepare the student for online employment.
