Course Description

Introduces and deepens appreciation of the diverse literatures of North America from post Civil War days to the present.

  • Textbook Information:  Please read all notes below - this list may be subject to some minor changes.
  • All books, short stories, poems, plays will be available in our campus bookstore, used bookstores, online via Amazon, used book dealers, family and friends.  Several titles you may already have at home.
  • You will have the choice and plenty of time to gather the materials before the semester begins in August - the short stories will be available within the online classroom - no need to search for these.  Several of the novels are available free online which will be posted in the online classroom and available in the bookstore.  If you do not want to read an entire novel online - you may purchase it via the directions above.

  • Approximate cost: Cost will vary - some of these can be purchased for as little as $1 in used bookstores (online) or obtained free from the library, family or friends.
    Shop around - you can pay as little as $20 total for used or as much as $150 for new. These books are classics and easily found almost everywhere.
  • Estimated Time per Week:  Students can expect to spend approximately 10 to 12 hours per week reading, writing, and participating in online class discussions.
  • Special Requirements: Email the instructor after you sign up for the class. Log into Etudes the first day of class (8/18).

  • Additional Comments: The entire course will be conducted online through the Etudes-NG program. Students are required to have Internet access, an active email account, the ability to use word processing, conduct Internet searches, attach files, send emails, and work independently.

Here is a flash tutorial (Flash presentation opens in a new window) that demonstrates the log in protocol. Be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES-NG. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES-NG.
