a Tradition of Wellness Alive
The Native Wellness
Leadership Institute is a series of courses designed to provide students
with a culturally appropriate understanding of the socio-cultural factors
effecting Native American wellness and disease. Students will learn
appropriate methods of promoting wellness and preventing disease in
Native American communities.
These courses were
developed by Mendocino College with assistance from the American Indian
Training Institute in cooperation with the Northern Circle Indian Housing
Authority's Alliance of Adults and Youth.
Listed below are
the scheduled dates and times when classes are meeting in the Fall 2000
at Mendocino College, Ukiah campus.
COURSE
#1
FOUNDATIONS
OF NATIVE AMERICAN HEALTH (HLH 48.04, Section #0352) 1 unit, 2 meetings
only: September 15 and October 20, 9 AM - 5 PM, Room #6020
A survey of holistic
wellness concepts as viewed through the experience and values of Native
American culture. Culturally appropriate community strategies for
disease prevention and health promotion are introduced.
COURSE #2
SUBSTANCE ABUSE
& RELATED ISSUES IN NATIVE AMERICAN COMMUNITIES (HLH 48.05, Section
#0353) 1 unit, 2 meetings only: November 17 and December 15, 9 AM -
5 PM, # 6020
A survey of the
historical and contemporary role of alcohol and other drugs in relationship
to the Native American population. The connection between U.S. post-colonial
policies and historical factors as etiology of substance abuse will
be discussed. Culturally appropriate and holistic prevention and treatment
strategies and resources will be examined.
These classes are
approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider # CEP
309, for 15 contact hours each. Course meets qualifications for 15 hours
of continuing education credit for MFTs and/or LCSWs as required by
the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, Provider # PCE 734.
